Hyaluronic acid supports healing and eases pain but has little effect on plaque. Chlorhexidine controls plaque but does not promote healing. The choice therefore depends on whether the patient can keep the area clean.
When plaque accumulates and brushing is difficult. For example after periodontal and implant surgery, and sutured wounds next to teeth. Used short term, until the patient can brush again.
When plaque is not a concern, or in combination with chlorhexidine products. For example after a biopsy and other wounds of the oral lining away from the teeth. It does not stain teeth or disturb taste, so it can be used for as long as needed.
Together: Forte with chlorhexidine. The Forte products and First Aid can be used alongside any chlorhexidine product, including where chlorhexidine is already part of the aftercare. The chlorhexidine takes care of plaque, and the hyaluronic acid speeds healing and reduces pain. The patient does not have to choose between them.
A systematic review of 22 clinical studies found significantly less pain seven days after third molar removal with hyaluronic acid, but no effect on swelling or trismus.
Hyaluronic acid in tooth extraction: a systematic review and meta-analysis. Clin Oral Investig 2023.In a randomised trial of 33 patients after periodontal surgery, wounds closed sooner with a rinse containing both chlorhexidine and hyaluronic acid than with no rinse.
Early periodontal wound healing after chlorhexidine rinsing: a randomized clinical trial.Topical hyaluronic acid has been studied in gingivitis, as an adjunct to periodontal treatment, in aphthous ulceration and after oral surgery. Many of the studies are small and results vary by indication. A few examples follow.
